• Basic Construction Training Manual for Trainers

  It is tailor made for the specific capacity building/training needs of SEWA for the earthquake reconstruction program that is, financed by the Swiss Solidarity Fond and implemented in partnership with Swiss Red Cross and technically. This manual is specifically focusing on the practical implementation level and provides a wide range of essential information as well as dos and don’ts for trainers to communicate to masons and supervisors during theoretical and on the job trainings. It also contains photos and sketches / drawings that add clarity to the context. These photos and sketches have been collected from various reference sources and are therefore, not of uniform character in its present form.

  Road Construction Materials

  Fundamental Tests, Formulae and Terminology issued in March 2003 as a draft for sharpening the knowledge of laboratory personnel (young engineers and technicians) who are responsible for the quality control of the roadbuilding materials. Due to economic growth and rapid development in Tanzania, the government has been boosting the road budget yearly, resulting in many road projects in the country at a time; hence, expanding job market for the local highway engineers. However, competency in highway technology (especially materials) has been impeding most engineers from the market.

• By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and classify different modern materials
  • Identify and characterize the fundamental crystal unit cells as well as its planes and directions
  • Distinguish different crystal imperfections and their roles in materials properties
  • Determine the effect of atomic motion through diffusion and apply this knowledge to specific industrial uses
  • Analyse phase diagram in order to predict, under equilibrium conditions, phases present and their chemical compositions at a given temperature and atomic/weight percent of each component
  • Identify the effect of deformation, solute atoms and phase transformations in hardening materials during heat treatments 
  • Differentiate the mechanical behaviour of various materials based on a few mechanical testing.
  • Evaluate the application of different engineering materials to have a basic understanding of materials selection
  • Distinguish among different corrosion mechanisms. – Select adequate prevention techniques.
  • Determine materials electrical properties based on energy band models. – Predict electrical conductivity.
